In sociolinguistics, prestige describes the level of respect accorded to a language or dialect as compared to those of other dialects or dialects in a speech community. The concept of prestige in sociolinguistics is usually closely related to that of prestige or class within a world. Generally, there may be positive respect associated with the dialect or dialect of the top classes, and negative respect with the terminology or vernacular of the reduced classes. The idea of prestige is also closely tied to the idea of the normal language, in this the most renowned dialect will probably be considered the regular language, though there are some noteworthy exceptions for this rule, such as Arabic. Reputation is particularly obvious in situations in which two or more 'languages' come in contact, and in diverse, socially stratified urban environments, by which there are probably speakers of numerous languages or perhaps dialects interacting frequently. In spite of common awareness that certain dialects or dialects are comparatively good or bad, appropriate or completely wrong, " judged on simply linguistic grounds, all languages—and all dialects—have equal merit". Different languages and dialects are accorded respect based upon elements which include " rich literary heritage, large degree of terminology modernization, considerable international ranking, or the reputation of its speakers". Having many of these characteristics will likely indicate the language can be considered being an excellent source of prestige; also, a language or language with couple of or non-e of these characteristics will be regarded as of low prestige. This kind of phenomenon is definitely not limited to English-speaking masse. In Western Europe, multiple languages were considered to be of high prestige at some point or another, including " Italian as the Mediterranean stato franca so that as the language of the Renaissance; and the 17th-18th century French from the court culture". There is a good correlation between prestige of the group of people as well as the prestige approved to the terminology they speak, because " terminology is intertwined with culture". Linguist Laurie Bauer's description of Latin's prestige exemplifies this sensation: " The prestige approved to the churchmen, lawyers and scholars who used Latin was transferred to the chinese language itself. Latin was held to become noble and beautiful, not simply the thoughts expressed in it or perhaps the people who ever done it. What is referred to as 'beauty' within a language is more accurately seen as an reflection of the prestige of its audio speakers.” Walt Wolfram, a teacher of linguistics at North Carolina State College or university, notes that he " can't think of any scenarios in the United States in which low-prestige groups have high-prestige language systems".
